How to Build a Natural Swimming Pool: The Complete Guide to Healthy Swimming at Home
Review It is a well laid out, detailed and useful book for anyone wanting to learn more about natural pools, and I only wish I'd read it before building my own.

--Ben Law, Permaculture magazineIt is a comprehensive, clear and tightly written book, full of illustrations, diagrams, tables, shorthand symbols and case studies to help navigate through what is clearly a subject full of complexity and variables, all of which need to be known and managed.

--Annabel Downs, Garden Design Journal About the Author Wolfram Kircher is a leading international expert on natural swimming pools and teaches plant ecology at the University of Applied Sciences at Bernburg, Germany.

Andreas Thon is an irrigation and water purification consultant and landscape architect who has built many natural swimming pools.

Natural swimming pools are cleaned by plants instead of chlorine so they are gentle on the eyes and healthy for swimmers. This book describes how to build a pool to suit your site and maintain the nutrient level in perfect balance to keep the algae down and the water sparkling.

As well as being delightful to swim in, these pools enhance the garden and provide a valuable water source for beneficial insects.

Consumer review about The Pinball Effect: How Renaissance Water Gardens Made the Carburetor Possible - and Other Journeys by James Burke (1997-12-23) :

Of course, everyone knows before we start this book that everything is connected in several ways to everything else. The Real skill is in finding these connections and telling about them in an interesting way. Well James Burke as editor, does this with great skill. I first read the book straight through. Then I came back and read with the hyper-links. Sure enough, you get different perspectives. Then you add the links that he did not think of. I am ready for the next book.By the way, James Burke was not the first to think this way. You should really read "The Ascent of Man" by Jacob Bronowski. It was used as a Humanities course in a local joiner collage.(Read more)

If you want to make the most of all seasons in your garden, Cool Flowers is a must-have.--Debra Prinzing "DebraPrinzing.com """I recommend picking up a copy of Cool Flowers for some inspiring ideas to grow hardy annuals in the cold months of gardening.

"--Helen Yoest "Gardening with Confidence "Who knew growing your favorite old-fashioned hardy annual flowers was so easy? Over the years, flower farmer Lisa Ziegler has figured it out and shares her success.

If you love to grow your own flowers, this book will change your gardening forever. - Saxon Holt, garden photographer, Photo BotanicKnowledge is the key to success, and Cool Flowers is here to help. Finally, here is an easy-to-understand book that explains the difference between hardy and tender annuals (known as half-hardy in the UK) and demystifies the selection and cultivation process.

Whether you seek a cutting garden to fill in gaps while shrubs and perennials mature, or simply want to grow easy-care flowers - this is the book you have been waiting for.

- Karen Chapman, owner of Le Jardinet and co-author of Fine FoliageWhere was this book when I began gardening? Goodness knows, I needed help choosing the best annuals for my garden.

Being a flower farmer, Lisa Ziegler knows her hardy annuals, those that can survive winter temperatures and light up the border in spring, and the ones that still perk up the garden come the 4th of July.

- Linda Yang, author of The City Gardener's HandbookCool Flowers is well... really cool. We are all so intent on keeping flowers blooming through the summer and fall that we forget that fall, winter and early spring plantings produce cut flower gardens like none other.

The flowers from her farm, The Gardener s Workshop Cut-Flower Farm, are popular among florists and upscale grocery stores and Garden Share members in the Virginia area.

Her seed catalog has 20,000 subscribers. The Gardener's Workshop website is a resource and teaching center for flower gardeners."

Everyone longs for fragrant early spring blossoms Snapdragons, Bells of Ireland, Sweet Peas, Sweet Williams and other beauties. But few grow them successfully in their own gardens because they haven t learned the simple cool-weather techniques that make it possible.

Expert flower grower Lisa Zeigler profiles 30 long-blooming stars of the spring garden, the "hardy annuals" that thrive when they are planted during cool conditions (instead of waiting until the warmth of spring and losing much of the season).

Give them a cool start, plant them in the right spot at the right time, and stand back. In no time at all you ll have a low-maintenance, vibrant spring flower garden that keeps on blooming when the "tender annuals" are dead and gone.

He has tended orchids at the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Hawaii and at Missouri Botanical Garden, where he managed one of the largest orchid collections in the United States over 10,000 plants.

A passionate grower of orchids for almost 40 years, Steven's basement is filled with stands of plants under grow lights. Steven has written for several publications including Fine Gardening, American Nurseryman, Nursery Business, and National Gardening, and has written weekly gardening columns for the Pittsburgh Post and the St.

Louis Post-Dispatch. In addition, Steven has appeared on national television talk shows, including Martha Stewart Living, Good Morning America, Today Show, Victory Garden, and CBS Morning News.

Though he has a special love for orchids and other tropical plants, Steven is interested in many facets of horticulture

With their refined beauty and elegant flower form, moth orchids (members of the genus Phalaenopsis) are often referred to as the basic black of the orchid world.

In fact, moth orchids are the most popular orchids in the world, accounting for a staggering 75 percent of all orchid plant sales.

More than merely beautiful, they are also among the easiest orchids to grow, whether in greenhouses, on windowsills, or under artificial lights, and the individual flowers can last for up to three months in pristine form.

These appealing traits make moth orchids the first choice of every orchid fancier, from rank beginners to dyed-in-the-wool fanatics.

Most flower lovers are familiar with the elegant white, pink, and striped hybrids, but a revolution in phalaenopsis breeding has resulted in an entirely new, diverse, and wonderful array of flower colors and patterns previously unimaginable.

Professional horticulturist and orchid expert Steven A. Frowine, author of Miniature Orchids (Timber Press, 2007), focuses on these new stars while also providing a detailed look at the classic hybrids and species.

Readers will be enticed by the book's 365 lavish color photographs and gratified by the wealth of practical advice on selecting and buying moth orchids.

Most importantly, Frowine shares his secrets on how these glorious plants can be grown to perfection, with recommendations about light levels, potting media, watering, and feeding.

Especially useful are his clearly illustrated step-by-step directions on how to repot, trim, and propagate moth orchids. If you're a novice orchid lover, this book will arm you with all the knowledge you need to enjoy moth orchids' magnificent blossoms in your home.

If you're a phalaenopsis fanatic, you'll be thrilled to see just how exciting the world of moth orchids has become.

Weather patterns are changing - earlier springs, record summer temperatures and erratic rainfall. And even when it is raining, we still have to be aware of conserving water. From her gardens in the dry heat of Australia and the wet of Hampshire, Marylyn Abbott has learnt about plant behavior in these conditions and divulges her knowledge in this aptly timed book.

She focuses on the dry gardens that work and why, how to create illusions of water, how to care for dry climate plants, and create the right conditions (including mulches to conserve water, plant groupings, preparation of plants) and drainage for the times when it suddenly pours and pours.

Together with a list of beautiful plants that will 'weather well', this is both a practical and inspirational read.

How to Make a Wildflower Meadow: Tried-And-Tested Techniques That Really Work
Review Look at James Hewetson-Brown's How to Make a Wildflower Meadow, which is a good down-to-earth mix of information and examples, including meadow turf and green roofs.

--Stephen Anderton, The TimesJames Hewetson-Brown knows how to make wildflower meadows Ð his turf was used for the London Olympics and several Chelsea Flower Show gardens.

In the most comprehensive guide to creating a meadow I've ever seen, he discusses the pros and cons of using seed, the merits of adding annuals and how to keep the display going for as long as possible.

His book leaves us with no excuses not to try creating meadows of our own. --Kate Bradbury, BBC Wildlife MagazineFor those who want to create meadows on a larger scale, new British publisher Filbert has just released How to Make a Wildflower Meadow, by James Hewetson-Brown.

This is a comprehensive guide to making and maintaining all kinds of meadows, with extensive advice, and more than two dozen case studies.

These include wildlife meadows, wildflower roofs, community schemes and the meadow stage-set created for Danny Boyle's 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.

--Jane Powers, The Irish Times About the Author James Hewetson-Brown was an arable farmer before he diversified into making wildflower turf products for gardeners and garden design professionals.

His pragmatic approach to making meadows which brings quick, reliable results has been adopted by leading garden designers.

Flowering meadows are appealing to gardeners and valuable for wildlife, but they can be difficult to establish. This book will change all that with its pragmatic yet eco-friendly advice. Gardeners and landscape professionals alike will relish James Hewetson-Brown's common sense approach. Consumer review about Start and Run a Gardening Business, 4th Edition: Practical advice and information on how to manage a profitable business :

Good book but I would say better for a medium size company or landscaper rather than one man gardener starting out. Having said that it has some good resources. Not very helpful for working out hourly or job rates although he says this will come with experience, quoting wrong prices could be make or break for a single person starting out, I was expecting more advice in the book re working out a charging structure. On the whole a good interesting easy read.(Read more)
